Essilor Stellest lenses for growing eyes

What is myopia?

Myopia means short-sightedness. Objects in the distance look blurred, while things close up are usually clearer. It commonly develops during childhood and can increase as children grow.

A child might struggle to see the classroom board or recognise someone across the playground, without realising their vision is different from anyone else’s.

An eye examination is the first step to finding out what is happening.

Signs worth checking

  • Difficulty seeing the board or other distant detail.
  • Sitting unusually close to the television.
  • Holding books or screens very close.
  • Frequent headaches or eye rubbing.

These signs can have other causes too. An eye test can identify whether your child needs glasses or further advice.

Clear vision today. A plan for growing eyes.

Ordinary single vision lenses correct blurred vision. Myopia control lenses also aim to slow the rate at which short-sightedness increases. They do not reverse an existing prescription or guarantee that it will stop changing.

Children who become short-sighted at a younger age have more years in which their prescription may increase. Higher levels of myopia are associated with a greater risk of some eye conditions later in life. This makes an early conversation worthwhile, without assuming every child needs the same treatment.

Our spectacle lens option

Essilor Stellest myopia control lenses

Stellest lenses combine your child’s prescription with a special arrangement of tiny lenslets. This design, called H.A.L.T. technology, changes how light is focused to help slow myopia progression, while providing clear vision through the central prescription zone.

They fit into suitable spectacle frames and are designed for everyday wear. We will help you choose a frame that fits properly and explain how your child should wear and look after their new glasses.

67%

Slower myopia progression on average*

Compared with standard single vision lenses over two years, in children who wore Essilor Stellest lenses for at least 12 hours a day, every day.

*Based on the two-year clinical trial reported by Bao and colleagues (2022). The trial enrolled children aged 8–13 in China. This is an average reduction in prescription progression, not a guarantee for an individual child or a 67% improvement in vision. See the study reference below.

Consistent wear matters. We will explain the recommended routine and arrange reviews so we can assess how your child is getting on.

Your child’s care at Greenfield Eyecare

  1. Start with an eye examination

Bring any previous prescriptions and your child’s current glasses. We will assess their vision and eye health, and talk about any changes you have noticed.

  2. Discuss the options together

We will consider your child’s prescription, age and everyday needs, explain whether Stellest lenses are suitable, and talk through the benefits, limitations and costs before you decide.

  3. Fit the glasses and review progress

A comfortable, well-fitting frame helps children wear their lenses consistently. We will explain follow-up arrangements and when to contact us if you have concerns.

We welcome families from Greenfield, Uppermill, Mossley and across Saddleworth and Oldham. You can also explore our children’s Tomato Glasses; we will check which frames are suitable for your child’s chosen lenses.

Everyday habits that help

Encourage regular time outdoors. Evidence is strongest for helping prevent or delay the onset of myopia; outdoor time does not replace prescribed treatment for a child who is already short-sighted.

Build breaks into long periods of reading or screen use. Keep up with recommended eye examinations and help your child follow their lens-wearing routine.

What does myopia control cost?

The price depends on your child’s lenses, frames and care requirements. Ask us for a personalised quote and an explanation of what is included, including any review appointments.

You can call 01457 353 100 to discuss your child’s current prescription and the next step.

Questions parents often ask

Will Stellest lenses cure my child’s myopia?

No. They correct vision and aim to slow further progression. Your child will still need their prescribed glasses, and their prescription may continue to change.

Is my child too young for myopia control?

Suitability depends on the child and the treatment. Book an assessment so we can discuss their prescription and development, rather than waiting for a particular age or a stronger prescription.

How long should my child wear Stellest lenses each day?

Follow the advice we give at fitting. The 67% result quoted above relates to children wearing their lenses for at least 12 hours every day over the two-year study. A consistent daily routine is important.

Are glasses the only myopia management option?

Specially designed contact lenses and overnight orthokeratology lenses are other approaches used in myopia management. The options differ in handling, risks and suitability. We can discuss the alternatives alongside spectacle lenses; this page focuses on the Stellest lenses we offer.

Can we use a prescription from another optician?

Bring your child’s current prescription and any earlier ones, or call us before booking. We can advise whether further assessment is needed before recommending myopia control lenses.

How will we know whether treatment is helping?

Regular reviews allow us to assess changes and discuss how your child is managing their glasses. Results vary, so we will explain what we can measure and whether the plan needs adjusting.
